dft @ sxsw – vfx onset 101 workshop
at the 2024 sxsw conference, digitalfilm tree (dft) vfx supervisors, dylan chudzynksi and carlo vega hosted a vfx onset 101 workshop. in it, they covered the basic responsibilities of a vfx supervisor as well as the tools available to them.
after defining some simple visual effects terminology, the presentation outlined the role of the supervisor through all stages or production, starting with script breakdowns and storyboarding, to communication with various production departments to the information gathering and plates needed to be shot on set in order to provide a visual effects artist with what they need to complete a composition.
common mistakes or challenges on set were also discussed as well as options on how to tell the desired stories in a more budget friendly manner, although more advanced methodology, such as motion control and led screens were also touched on.
